Health Insurance Before Medicare: Options for Michiganders Under 65

By the licensed agents at Certified Benefit Advisors, Battle Creek, Michigan · 7 min read · Published

Quick answer

If you need health insurance before age 65 in Michigan, your main options are an employer plan, COBRA continuation, an ACA Marketplace plan with possible income-based subsidies, or coverage through a spouse. Short-term plans exist but offer limited protection.

Not everyone we help is on Medicare. Many people in Battle Creek and across Michigan need major medical coverage before 65: early retirees, self-employed workers, contractors, people between jobs, and families whose employers do not offer insurance. If that is you, you have more options than you might think.

Marketplace (ACA) plans

The Health Insurance Marketplace is where most individuals and families buy major medical coverage. These plans cover essential health benefits, cannot turn you down or charge more because of pre-existing conditions, and many people qualify for premium tax credits that lower the monthly cost, sometimes substantially. What you pay depends on your household size and estimated income for the year.

Open enrollment for Marketplace plans runs each fall, with coverage starting in January. Outside of that window, you need a qualifying life event, such as losing employer coverage, getting married, or moving, to enroll through a Special Enrollment Period. Retiring before 65 and losing employer coverage is one of the most common qualifying events we see.

COBRA: convenient but costly

If you leave a job with health benefits, COBRA lets you keep the same plan for a limited time, usually up to 18 months. The catch is that you pay the entire premium plus a small administrative fee, which shocks people who only ever saw their payroll share. COBRA can make sense for a short gap or mid-treatment situations, but it is worth comparing against Marketplace plans before you accept it.

Ancillary coverage that fills the gaps

Major medical plans often come with large deductibles. Ancillary products can soften the financial blow of a serious diagnosis or hospital stay. We help Michigan families with cancer plans, hospital indemnity plans, heart attack and stroke coverage, and skilled care plans that pay cash benefits directly to you, which you can use for deductibles, travel to treatment, or everyday bills while you recover.

These plans supplement major medical coverage; they are not a substitute for it. They are also popular with people on Medicare who want help with the out-of-pocket costs a serious illness can bring.

Dental, vision, and hearing

Major medical and Original Medicare both leave gaps in dental, vision, and hearing care. Stand-alone plans are available at modest cost and can be paired with almost any health coverage. For older adults, coverage for exams, dentures, glasses, and hearing aids is some of the most-used insurance they own.
